History of Noguchi Coffee Table

The Noguchi coffee table was first introduced by Herman Miller, a few years before 1947. Although many people have guessed that the table is from Japan. However, it was truly made in the United States. If you are wondering where it gets its Japanese name, then it is because it was made by a Japanese artist named Isamu Noguchi. As it became more popular, it was then known by the name of its maker.

The Noguchi coffee table consisted of a heavy place glass top and a wooden base which is composed of two curved wood pieces that look identical. The coffee table was actually the evolution of a table designed by the same person in 1939. This previous table is unnamed but it was also a glass table with rosewood. The table was originally produced for the president of Museum of Modern Art, A. Counger Goodyear.

Herman Miller was highly impressed by the rosewood table that he later on recruited Noguchi. He asked Noguchi to create another table, similar in the freeform sculptural base with the biomorphic glass at the top that can be used for both business offices as well as residential atmosphere. Noguchi created several tables before he finally created the carved solid walnut table as the base and the two identical parts, one for was smooth in form and the other was the base. When finally Noguchi came out with the original Noguchi coffee table in 1947, Herman Miller described it as the “design for production” and “sculpture for us” table
